Expand Metal

Expand Metal

Expanded metal is a metal mesh formed by spreading a metal plate while making a staggered cut by a blade, and shaping the cut into diamond (Standard type) or hexagonal pattern (Grating type). Various materials are used, including iron, aluminum, stainless steel, nickel, and titanium.

Expanded metal is lightweight and has excellent post-processability. In addition, there are no mesh joints, and the applied load is dispersed. As a result, the tensile strength is strong. Taking advantage of this feature, expanded metal is used in a wide range of applications, including air vent windows in electrical equipment, acoustic equipment, firing trays for sintering process, machine covers, cable racks, fences, construction, and civil engineering materials.

LW (Long Way of Diamond) Center-to-center distance in the long dimension of the mesh
T (Thickness) Plate thickness
W (Width) Step Width (Feed Width)
Strand Narrow portion of the mesh
Bond Wide portion where the mesh intersects

Specifications of Expanded Metal

Standard type (JIS G3351)

Standard type have diamond-shaped meshes, and the bond part is short. It has an orderly mesh, strong impact resistance, and is used in a wide range of applications. In addition, it is often used for interior and exterior, etc. because of its beautiful appearance.

Grating type (JIS G3351)

Grating type have hexagonal pattern meshes, and its bond part is long. It is more robust compared to other types because of the standard on which people are assumed to ride. It has a high anti-slip effect and is often used in walkways and building materials.

Flat processing of expanded metals

Expanded metal features raised surfaces, but this may be a disadvantage for some applications. In order to cope with this problem, roller machining is possible so that entire mesh is flat.
