
Mesh Filters for Low-Pressure and Gravity Casting
In aluminum casting, impurities such as oxides, slag, and other inclusions may enter the molten metal during pouring. These contaminants can cause casting defects, reduce surface quality, and affect the mechanical performance of the final product. For this reason, mesh filters are often installed in the gating system to help capture foreign materials and stabilize molten metal flow.
Mesh filters are commonly used in both low-pressure casting and gravity casting processes. In these applications, the filter plays an important role in improving casting quality by reducing contamination and helping control the flow of molten aluminum before it enters the mold cavity.
There are two main types of mesh filters used for aluminum casting: metal mesh filters and glass fiber mesh filters.
Metal mesh filters are typically made of steel or stainless steel wire. They offer excellent strength and dimensional stability, making them suitable for applications where the filter must maintain its shape during handling and casting. Different mesh sizes, wire diameters, and formed shapes can be selected depending on the casting conditions and product design. On the other hand, when aluminum scrap is recycled after casting, separation of the metal filter material may be required depending on the recycling process.
Glass fiber mesh filters are lightweight and can also be formed into various shapes. They help remove inclusions while improving molten metal flow. Because glass fiber is a non-metallic material, it may provide advantages in some recycling processes where separation between aluminum and iron-based materials is an issue. In addition, heat-resistant treatment or coating may be applied depending on the casting environment.
The most suitable mesh filter depends on several factors, including casting method, molten metal temperature, required strength, mesh opening, product shape, production volume, and recycling requirements.
